Endotracheal Tube Uncuffed
The purpose of an uncuffed ETT is to maintain a patent airway and to deliver oxygen and medications to the lungs. It is inserted through the mouth or nose and into the trachea.
No cuff: There is no cuff at the end of the tube. This means that there is no seal between the tube and the trachea.
Murphy eye: A small hole in the side of the tube that allows air to escape if the tube is blocked.
Pilot balloon: There is no pilot balloon.
Sterilization indicator: A chemical strip that changes color when the tube has been sterilized.
Radio opaque stripe: A stripe on the tube that makes it visible on X rays.
Size: The size of the tube is measured in millimeters and is determined by the patient’s age and size.
Shape: The uncuffed ETT is a straight tube, but there are also curved tubes available. Curved tubes are used in patients with difficult airways.
